MAKING SURE OIL DELIVERY IS SAFE

Date: July 2010

Offset fills provide a convenient way to deliver fuel to a remote oil storage tank. However, Hytek is receiving reports that some oil suppliers are refusing to deliver fuel to some tanks with long offset fills, as they don't have a suitable fill point cabinet and alarm. The problem in these situations is that the driver cannot see the tank he is filling.

When installing an offset fill, it's vital that it's designed correctly so the driver can deliver oil safely without the risk of spillage. Remote - or offset - fill points should comply with BS5799 or OFTEC standards OFS T100 or OFST200. Normally, the fill point for an oil storage tank is integral to the tank, and therefore any spills should be contained. But offset fills must have a drip tray with the capacity to hold the contents of the fill pipe, should any oil be spilled during delivery.

Hytek's range of fill point cabinets incorporate an integral 13.6 litre drip tray with sight gauge, and come with a choice of side or top entry for the fill pipes. Furthermore, they have a non return valve to prevent the oil line draining, and a lever ball valve to isolate the line.

The Pollution Prevention Guidelines (PPG2) recommend that an automatic overfill prevention device should be fitted if the tank and vent pipe cannot be seen by the person controlling the delivery. A tank alarm is an ideal way to meet this requirement, and can be installed within the fill point cabinet. Hytek's three channel alarm can detect overfill, low levels or bund alarm situations on one, two or three tanks. This makes it suitable for offset fill installations, and it can be used with both oil and liquid biofuel.

Hytek also has a range of UPP flexible plastic pipework, which is ideal for underground offset fill supply pipes. UPP plastic pipework is supplied in 50m or 100m coils to eliminate buried joints, saving both time and hassle as no joints should be required underground.

HYTEK - HELPING YOU TO MEET POLLUTION PREVENTION GUIDELINES

Date: June 2010

Customers can easily meet Pollution Prevention guidelines (PPG) from the environment agency, with an extensive range of oil, grease and workshop equipment from Hytek.

Under PPG26 spill kits containing materials such as leak-sealing putty, over drums, drain seals, oil absorbents and personal protective equipment should be on site. Hytek offer a series of oil and fuel spill kits, in 20, 50, 100 or 200 litre capacity.

The Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001 states that oil must be stored in a container which is of sufficient strength and structural integrity to ensure that it is unlikely to burst or leak. Under these guidelines a secondary containment system with a capacity of not less than 110% of the containers storage capacity must also be in place. Sump pallets are ideal for this purpose. New from Hytek is the single, IBC sump pallet with a pallet grate that can take up to 1500kgs.

Andy Seal, Sales Director, said: "25 years ago when Hytek started trading we only sold commercial fuel pumps, our range has continued to grow and grow. Now we offer a whole variety of equipment, which will help customers comply with the latest pollution regulations. Who knows where the next 25 years will take us?"

Hytek's one stop shop also offers a selection of digital hose end oil meters, hose reels for oil, grease, and compressor kits; as well as a range of equipment for dispensing fuel.

Making life easier is Hytek's willingness to work together with their customers. The company will open trade accounts within the hour. Extensive stock enables them to ship most orders, provided they are placed before 4pm for next day delivery to most of the UK. The company aims to deliver where their customers want, and when they want.

Hytek's products are sold only through distributors. For more information or a copy of the latest distributor catalogue, also available on CD, contact Hytek on 01279 815600.

PRICE RISES MAKE PROTECTING YOUR FUEL ESSENTIAL

Date: June 2010

As diesel costs continue to rise, fleet managers are increasingly turning to private pumps and fuel management systems, like Hytek's ALPHA FC10 pump and integral monitor system, to keep budgets under control.

The ALPHA FC10 provides effective monitoring of the economy of the vehicles in your fleet and can flag up potential problems. Management software has standard reports or allows you to create tailor made ones detailing how often drivers fill up, and by how much, and you can also track their mileage. A vehicle producing low miles per gallon might need a service for example.

The FC10 also offers stringent protection against theft which is becoming more common since prices have rocketed. Fuel tags prevent unauthorised use and fuel management data ensures that you know which drivers are using the most fuel so you can easily spot a problem.

Keeping a close eye on your fleet's fuel usage will help to protect your fuel, which is essential at a time when rising costs are squeezing budgets.

Also available from Hytek is the FC20 - a standalone fuel management system, which can connect to existing pumps.

ADBLUE ALPHA PUMP

Date: May 2010

Fuelling specialists Hytek offer a Adblue version of their established Alpha fuel pump. Designed specifically to cope with the aggressive qualities of Adblue, the new pump is housed in a robust, stainless steel cabinet and is fully electronic.

Adblue is essentially a water based chemical solution which reduces nitrogen oxide emissions from the exhaust of diesel vehicles. The dosing rate for Adblue is approximately 5% of diesel consumption. Although it is non-toxic and safe to handle, it can be corrosive for some metals, and therefore correct storage and dispensing are very important.

Adblue is very susceptible to contamination, and must not be dispensed from normal fuel pumps. Any contaminants from rubber hoses/seals (on pumps which are not designed to handle Adblue) can damage vehicle engines, causing hefty repair bills and increasing vehicle downtime.

Hytek Sales Director Andy Seal said "Adblue is becoming increasingly popular, and many of our customers have been asking for a version of the tried and tested Alpha pump that would cope with the aggressive qualities of Adblue. The Alpha pump is competitively priced compared to many other products on the market, and uses proven technology to offer a simple solution for Adblue."

Hytek's heavy duty Alpha Adblue pump is fully electronic, so there are no levers, switches or knobs to worry about. Meter readings are accurate to +/-1%, with the backlit LCD display capable of showing up to 999,999.9 litres. It has easy access for straightforward service and maintenance.

A 4m delivery hose is supplied as standard, with an option of automatic nozzles. Pumping speed is 40 litres/minute, which is ideal as Adblue tanks are smaller in capacity. Adblue consumption is 5% of diesel so for every one hundred litres of diesel, five litres of Adblue is used.

For the smaller user Hytek also supply an IBC mount Adblue pump kit, that mounts straight onto a 1000 litre IBC (Intermediate Bulk Container).

HYTEK ALPHA PUMP OFFERS MORE OPTIONS

Date: April 2010

Hytek is one of the leading suppliers of commercial fuel pumps, offering an impressive choice of options for their Alpha range.

Last year, they introduced the Alpha Mk2, incorporating over 12 improvements to the original Alpha design. Available in a choice of 50, 70 or 90 litres per minute pumping speed, Alpha Mk2 now comes with the option of a front nozzle holster which is proving very popular for use in tank cabinets, or where space is limited.

Other improvements include a new aluminium nozzle holster, and a new nozzle switch that no longer needs a magnet in the nozzle trigger guard to operate. This cuts down on the guard types that engineers need to keep as spares, and avoids the problem of magnets working loose.

For safety, an optional built in hose retractor is also available, which keeps hose lengths of up to 4m off the ground. An improved mains junction box with larger terminals means quicker installation, and the pulser junction box is angled at 45 degrees to make life easier.

Andy Seal, Sales Director for Hytek said "we have introduced the new features as a result of customer feedback, and we think the Alpha Mk2 is now even easier to install and use. But one thing that we have retained is the robust stainless steel cabinet design which has made Alpha fuel pumps so reliable since they were first launched in 2002."

The backlit LCD display has a new opto-isolated relay to allow connection to all fuel management systems, and a reed relay option is still available. A new electronic calibration feature also means that the number of decimal places shown and pulse output type can be changed without having to draw a 20 litre measure to recalibrate. This saves carrying 20 litres of fuel on site, which can be tricky to dispose of.

The Alpha is also available in a new B100 biodiesel version, and an Adblue version was also launched recently. Standard Alphas will pump diesel and up to B30 biodiesel, and there's a resale model available too.

Several Alpha versions are available with Hytek's FC10 fuel management system. A new cost effective expansion box means you can link two or four pumps on site. It's also possible to have multiple dispenser options by using the master and slave versions, linking up to six pumps to one fuel management system.

TANK MAINTENANCE MUST INCREASE

Date: March 2010

With the development of fuels, tank maintenance needs to increase according to fuelling and lubrication specialists Hytek. Sales director Andy Seal said "the inclusion of biofuels in both road and heating fuel means we need to rethink the way we store fuel."

Because biofuel is hydroscopic, it attracts water and microbes. Microbial contamination is caused when microbes enter fuel and live on the suspended water in the fuel or on the water/fuel interface at the bottom of the storage tank. Microbes grow quickly into large colony forming units (CFUs) which can get sucked into fuel supply lines, blocking filters.

In order to help maintain a good quality of fuel, good tank hygiene is becoming even more important. Water is a major problem, and can enter tanks through vents, fuel deliveries or condensation.

Whilst biocide will kill microbes, it will not remove the dead bugs. Hytek's fuel conditioner is a simple to install device which can be fitted to pump suction lines. Once installed, the fuel conditioner renders microbes dormant. As well as breaking down already formed CFUs and splitting them into their individual microbial size, it prevents new CFUs being formed. Individual microbes are less than one micron in size, so will pass through pump filters and eventually get burnt by engines or burners.

Andy Seal stresses that the Hytek fuel conditioner is just part of the solution for keeping fuel clean. "Regular tank maintenance is vital, and the new types of fuel we are seeing on the market mean fuel storage is even more important than before. The introduction of up to 7% FAME (biofuel) in gasoil will mean microbes could become even more of a problem, but it can be addressed by good tank and fuel hygiene."
