Surrender Your Staplers…!

07.10.2011

Hytek tackle the environment in a very novel way.

In a bid to save money and help the environment, Hytek held a stationery amnesty this month.

Employees were encouraged to rummage through their desk drawers and cabinets to empty out all unused and surplus stationery in a bid to contribute to the Zero Waste Scheme. Organised by Purchasing Assistant Marzzella Munro, she explained, “The week-long stationery amnesty gives all staff an opportunity to contribute to conserving scarce resources by reducing waste and giving up any redundant or unused products.”

The amnesty also called for any broken pieces of equipment to be surrendered in the hope that it can be salvaged. Marzzella believes that this will reduce the amount of waste that is taken to the landfill, helping to reduce the risk of pollution, “As well as helping the environment, the amnesty will help us reduce the direct running costs associated with the procurement of stationery. It also frees up valuable storage space in cupboards, cabinets and desks. Material builds up in these places and often becomes a bit of a ‘black hole’!”

The amnesty has been declared a success and supports Hytek’s environmental policy on waste, with the surplus equipment being reused, recycled, redistributed or repaired. Hundreds of items were handed over including highlighters, hole punchers and even binoculars! The items submitted have an estimated total value of over £500, employees are encouraged to check the amnesty cupboard before requesting any new stationery to keep costs down.
